Decisions

A database resize needs a decision record

A migration was spending hours in a database step. The engineering update described memory pressure and temporary-file activity, and the owner approved a larger database instance. The change itself was only part of the story: another person reviewing the environment later would need the reason for it.

The Duva board captured the observed bottleneck, the owner’s decision, the configuration change, and the initial modifying state. A follow-up confirmed that the new instance was available and the dependent services were healthy. It also distinguished the migration runs around the restart, rather than treating every running task as one continuous success.

Keep the reason beside the change. A useful infrastructure decision record connects the symptom, the evidence, the authorized decision, and the follow-up result. Link that record from the next handoff so the team can revisit the choice with context instead of guessing from the current configuration.
